Liposuction breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty involves removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to provide breast size that is more in proportion with the body. The latest annual statistics report of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reveals that the breast reduction increased by 11% in 2017, after a 4% decline in 2016. The procedure, which offers both aesthetic and functional benefits, can be performed using minimally-invasive liposuction technology.

For many women, overly large breasts can be a source of embarrassment and even cause psychological distress. One of common complaints of women with large breasts is that it prevents them from wearing fashionable clothes and engaging in active sports, especially in summer. Large breasts can also cause physical discomfort such as back and neck pain, skin maceration, skin changes, infections, inability to exercise and/or bra straps digging in. The latest ASPS annual plastic surgery report provides statistics pertaining to patients who underwent breast reduction surgery for aesthetic purposes.

ASPS President Jeffrey E. Janis, MD attributes the recent spike in reduction mammaplasty to high patient satisfaction with the results. “Breast reductions are consistently reported as one of the highest patient satisfaction procedures because it positively affects a woman’s quality of life. It addresses both functional and aesthetic concerns,” he notes.

When it comes to satisfaction with the outcomes of breast reduction surgery, a study from Denmark reported that patients and surgeons focus on different factors, that is, while patients are most concerned about symmetry, while surgeons are focused more on technical factors. A 2012 ASPS report discussed the study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, which reported that 80% of women who had undergone breast reduction surgery rated their cosmetic result good. At six months, nearly 90 percent of women rated their cosmetic outcomes as “good” or “very good.” The study also suggested that the information provided before breast reduction surgery and the patient’s level of confidence have a significant impact on satisfaction with the results.

ASPS statistics also reveal how Americans are turning to new and innovative ways to shape their bodies, as minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures have increased nearly 200% since 2000. In fact, in NYC, plastic surgery facilities offer breast reduction for men and women using Smartlipo Triplex laser liposuction. This minimally invasive procedure provides great results in minimal downtime.
