The latest statistics on cosmetic surgical procedures for men show that male breast reduction procedures rose 11% in 2012-2013. The 2013 American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) report also reveals that the procedure ranks fourth in the list of popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men with 22,939 procedures in 2013.

Interestingly, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) also reports a rise in the demand for treatment in the U.K in 2013. According to the report in The Guardian, male breast reduction procedures showed 23% increase in 2012-2013. The procedure stands third in the list of popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men in the U.K.

Gynecomastia is a condition where excess glandular tissue builds up in the male chest, resulting in ‘man boobs’, as they are not so kindly called. Oversized male breasts could be the result hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, use of certain drugs, or Gilbert’s syndrome. The condition, which can occur in infancy, adolescence, and old age, can be embarrassing and stressful. Luckily, it can be resolved with plastic surgery. Treatment for gynecomastia involves removing the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin, and contouring the area for a manly chest.

Established practices use minimally invasive laser liposuction technologies such as SmartLipo Triplex for breast reduction in men. The treatment can result in a flatter, firmer, manlier chest. With local anesthesia, less pain and discomfort, minimal scarring, bleeding or bruising, quicker recovery time and improved skin tissue tightening, the procedure can bring about a significant change in the contour of the chest. Results are usually immediately visible. Some swelling and bruising should be expected and the final results may take about 6-8 months to appear.

It’s important that you choose a plastic surgeon with experience in using advanced laser liposuction technology for breast reduction. The surgeon will first evaluate you to rule out any medical issues. Ideal candidates for this surgery are men with firm and elastic skin. You should also have realistic expectations and remember that individual results may vary.
