Athleisure Clothing driving Demand for Female Liposuction, says Study

Liposuction in New York City is a popular option for men and women seeking to achieve a trimmer, well-shaped body. Liposuction is amongst the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in US. The latest annual statistics report of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reveals that, of the more than 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2018, a total of 258,558 liposuctions were performed and that the popularity of the procedure grew by 5% from 2017. Annual stats from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reveal that liposuction is on the rise in popularity in the U.K. too. The Daily Mail reported on a recent study which found that “athleisure clothing” is partly responsible for a 12% spike in demand for liposuction among women.

Athleisure is a fashion trend in which clothes designed for workouts and other athletic activities are worn in other settings, such as at the workplace, at school, or at other casual or social occasions. The term ‘athleisure’ officially entered the dictionary in April 2016 and is defined as ‘casual, comfortable clothing designed to be suitable both for exercise and everyday wear’. Outfits includes yoga pants, tights, sneakers, leggings and shorts that “look like athletic wear” and are characterized as “fashionable, dressed up sweats and exercise clothing”.

Women strive to look fit to pull off the athleisure trend in a social setting, and now many are trying to replace their rigorous exercise regimens with liposuction. BAAPS notes: “Instead of stepping up the gym routine in the hopes of a washboard stomach, they are turning to plastic surgery.”

The athleisure market, which was almost a $46 billion market in the U.S. in 2016, is expected to double, reaching $83 billion by 2020 (boxfox.co). Experts say that the athleisure trend is driving consumers to go to extreme measures to achieve the body-conscious look. This was evident in UK data which reveals a 12% increase in liposuction procedures, specially done at stomach, hips, thighs or buttocks, from 2,039 in 2017 to 2,286 in 2018.

The study also notes that the trend is also driven by the outspokenness of celebrities such as Jane Fonda, an American actress who recently admitted to having surgery over several decades to enhance her looks and prolong her career.

Liposuction continues to be the gold standard in body contouring because of its versatility, efficiency and effectiveness. The procedure is not a weight loss measure, although it can help with stubborn areas of fat. With liposuction, one treatment may be all you need to reshape problem areas. Today, body liposuction in NYC is performed using advanced minimally-invasive technologies such as Smartlipo Triplex. This laser-assisted procedure comes with far less surgical trauma than its traditional counterpart as well as short downtime and recovery. However, the results are dependent on the skills and experience of the provider. So if you are considering Smartlipo laser liposuction in New York City, do your research well and choose the right surgeon.
