How to Prepare for a Cosmetic Surgical Procedure

Millions of Americans undergo cosmetic surgery every year and liposuction in New York City is one of the most widely performed procedures. Each cosmetic surgical procedure has its own pros and cons and surgeons should discuss them with the patient before the treatment. While most people are familiar with different types of procedures and the results we can expect, they may not be aware about lifestyle changes and common side effects that can occur during the recovery phase. Proper preparation is one of the keys to a smooth recovery and optimal, long-lasting outcomes. Here are some facts you should know if you are considering cosmetic surgery:

  • Do your homework: Before you have a cosmetic surgical procedure, you should do some proper research to understand your options, check the credentials of the surgeon, and understand the risks involved in undertaking the procedure. Make sure that you enquire how complications would be handled, what would happen if you needed revision surgery, and how much it might cost and so on. You must be able to ask the right questions so that you can make an informed decision.
  • Quit smoking: It is necessary to stop smoking for at least for few weeks before and after surgery. This is because nicotine causes the blood vessels to constrict and reduces blood supply to the organs and tissues, which can stop wounds from healing post-surgery. Smoking can have a profound impact on your body and change the way an anesthetic drug works during surgery.
  • Avoid alcohol and certain medications: Do not drink alcohol one to two weeks before surgery as alcohol can interfere with normal anesthetic drug metabolism. Your surgeon will also advise you to avoid taking certain medications. For instance, patients are told to avoid taking medications that contain aspirin as it thins the blood and can lead to excessive bleeding during the procedure. Inform your surgeon before the procedure about the medications including vitamins you are taking on daily basis. It can also complicate your surgery and healing.
  • Take the recommended vitamins: Some supplements are recommended prior to surgery because they increase the body’s ability to heal, build new collagen, and decrease swelling. But you should only take the supplements that your surgeon recommends. These generally include vitamins A and C. Vitamin C promotes healing and is a free-radical scavenger. Some surgeons also recommend taking Bromelain and Arnica Montana the night before your surgery which could help with bruising or soreness.
  • Take adequate time off from work: You’ll need to take leave from work based on your surgeon advice.
  • Take pain control medications as advised: Pain medications can help speed up your recovery and reduce the risk of complications such as pneumonia and blood clots. You may receive multiple pain treatments, depending on your needs and the type of surgery you’re having.
