Differences between SmartLipo and Traditional Liposuction

by | Jan 11, 2021 | Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction can help patients who have localized fat deposits in specific areas of the body which fail to respond to vigorous exercise and diets. Traditional liposuction surgery can remove stubborn fat pockets but cannot tighten the skin. Newer technologies like SmartLipo Triplex Laser Liposuction can address unwanted fat and also can get rid of the loose skin. Here are the basic differences between traditional liposuction and Smartlipo laser liposuction:

Traditional Liposuction SmartLipo Laser Liposuction
Multiple large incisions are made in the area to be treated and a large cannula is moved back and forth to scrape and disrupt the fat cells beneath the skin. The cannula is also connected to an aspiration device to suction out the disrupted fat cells from the body. Small incisions are made to insert the micro-cannula encasing the laser-fiber beneath the skin. Smartlipo utilizes laser energy to soften and liquefy the fat and makes it easy to remove with the cannula, resulting in less bruising than the conventional procedure.
It only removes unwanted fat from hips, arms, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, etc. As it cannot treat loose skin, it can cause dimples or sagging skin, especially in older patients and patients who have less skin elasticity. It can remove unwanted fat pockets and also tighten the skin.
General anesthesia is used, so the patient will be in an unconscious state. General anesthesia needs to be administered by a licensed anesthesiologist, so the procedure is usually performed in hospitals or surgical centers. Local anesthesia decreases the risk of complication as the patient is awake. The effect will stay for hours after the procedure, reducing the need for narcotic pain medications post surgery.
The use of general anesthesia increases the risk of complication. Less brusing and swelling.
Significant brusing and swelling Patients can return to normal activities and can return to work 1 to 2 days after the procedure. They can resume low-impact exercise in 3-5 days.
Depending on the extent of fat removed, the patient would need to stay at the hospital and take bed rest for several days after the procedure. Pain and discomfort can last several weeks. Compression garments would be needed for just four weeks.
Compression garments will have to be worn for more than six weeks.

Liposuction results are said to be permanent but weight gain can affect them. To avoid that and maintain your results, follow a healthy lifestyle.

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a weight-loss method or an alternative to proper exercise or diet. It removes unwanted fat deposits that are resistant to weight loss methods. Unlike traditional liposuction, SmartLipo Triplex also helps address loose skin and also comes with less downtime, pain, and short recovery. If you are considering SmartLipo Triplex Laser Liposuction, it is crucial to consult a plastic surgeon with extensive experience and skills in utilizing this energy-based technique.
