The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) reported that liposuction was the most heavily requested treatment in the world in 2013. So it came as no surprise when the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) revealed that it is the most popular surgical procedure in the U.S.

According to the ASAPS, up to 363,912 liposuction procedures were performed in 2013 compared to 313,011 procedures in 2012. So the demand for this cosmetic surgical procedure grew 16% during 2012-2013. The statistics also reveal that lipoplasty was the most common surgical procedure for people age 35-50 in 2012 and for people age 35-50 as well as age 51-64 in 2013.

Liposuction offers both men and women enormous possibilities to remove stubborn fat from various areas of the body and contour the abdomen, waist, breasts, arms, thighs, and buttocks, and even delicate areas like the face, chin, ankles and calves. Rapid strides in technology have improved the overall efficiency of the procedure. The use of minimally invasive laser-enabled modalities allows the plastic surgeon to provide excellent body sculpting results in minimal time and with minimal side effects. These benefits including fast recovery make it the ideal option for people with busy lifestyles.

The latest ASAPS data also reveals that the highest proportion of cosmetic surgeries – 57% – were performed in office facilities, compared to 14% in hospitals, 28% in free-standing centers and 1% in others. The fact that laser liposuction can be easily, effectively and safely performed with local anesthesia in the AAAASF-accredited surgical suite of a plastic surgeon’s office makes it time-saving for the physician and cost-effective for the patient. This could also be responsible for the rising popularity of lipolysis.

Liposuction is also an important element in women-specific treatments such as Mommy Makeovers and bridal cosmetic procedures. This surgical procedure can help men achieve something that many hours in the gym cannot – the much-desired six pack abs. An increasing number of people are also going in for body contouring procedures to improve their career prospects or to emulate a favorite celebrity.
